Pérez's career has seen various successes, including tying for first place in the Capablanca Memorial tournament in 2008 and winning the 2015 American Continental Championship. In 2009 he competed in the Chess World Cup, and also in the tournament of the elite group at the Capablanca Memorial which took place in 2012 and 2013.
Pérez played for the Cuban national team in the Chess Olympiads from 2006 to 2016. He transferred to the United States Chess Federation in 2018, changing his federation affiliation.
He is also a coach, currently serving as the head coach for Webster University’s chess team. His twin brother, Yasser Quesada Pérez, is also a notable chess player, who holds the title of Grandmaster.
