Yuri Sergeyevich Razuvaev (February 10, 1945 – March 21, 2012) was an International Grandmaster of chess who was also a notable chess coach and author. Born in Moscow, Soviet Union, he had several accomplishments in chess tournaments both locally and internationally since his early career.


Notably, Razuvaev won the prestigious Hastings tournament in 1979/80, the international tournament in Leon 1980, as well as the USSR Championship in 1986. He also represented USSR in the European Team Championship in 1980 and 1983, contributing to the team's victory with excellent performances.


As a notable chess trainer and writer, he authored numerous articles and books on chess. He served as a senior trainer in the USSR national team, and also became the personal coach for the World Champions Anatoly Karpov and Alexandra Kosteniuk.


Razuvaev was awarded the titles International Master and International Grandmaster by FIDE in 1973 and 1976 respectively, and was appointed as FIDE Senior Trainer in 2006. He played a significant role in the FIDE Trainers' Commission, and was instrumental in introducing the system of chess titles in this organization.


His most influential contribution to the chess world was the development of the "Razuvaev Variation" in the King's Indian Defence. It is widely appreciated and is still in use across various levels of chess competitions.


Yuri Razuvaev passed away in 2012 after a long illness. As per FIDE's announcement, his contribution to chess both as a player and trainer will be remembered for a long time.
