He started playing chess at the age of 14 and by 1980, he became Australian Chess Champion. Rogers was awarded the International Master title in 1980 and later the Grandmaster title in 1985, becoming the first Australian to achieve the latter.

Rogers' most noteworthy achievements in the world of chess include winning tournaments in Groningen (1986), Reykjavík (1990), Geneva (1991), and Dresden (1992). He also led the Australian team to a top ten finish in the 1988 Thessaloniki Chess Olympiad. He also has been a representative of Australia in a total of 13 Chess Olympiads.

Some of his key accomplishments also extend to training other chess aspirants. He tutored Woman Grandmaster Zhao Zong-Yuan and prepared her for the 2006 Turin Chess Olympiad.

Rogers has also written for chess publications and authored a number of books on chess theory. In 2007, he was declared by the Australian Chess Federation to be Australia's most successful chess author. He also worked as a columnist for the Dutch magazine, New in Chess.

However, due to a heart condition Rogers was asked by his doctor to stop competitive play in 2007. Afterwards, he focused on his career as a chess journalist and commentator and remains a highly respected figure in the chess world.
