Bator Sambuev is a Russian-Canadian chess Grandmaster born on June 27, 1980 in Buryatia, Russia. He was granted the prestigious title of Grandmaster by FIDE (the World Chess Federation) in 2006.


Sambuev started playing chess at a very young age and enjoyed significant success in youth tournaments. After moving to Canada in 2002, he continued his successful career and became an important figure of the local chess community. In 2011 and 2017, Sambuev became the Canadian Chess Champion, marking the peak of his professional achievements.


Sambuev's playing style is characterized by aggression and tactical sharpness. Despite mainly being a 1.e4 (1. Pawn to e4) exponent, he often uses aggressive body language during games to unsettle his opponents.


Beyond achieving high results in various tournaments, Sambuev has also made several contributions to chess literature. He authored the chess book "The King’s Indian Defence: Move by Move" and co-authored "The Modern Scandinavian: Themes, Structures & Plans in an Increasingly Popular Chess Opening".


Bator Sambuev now lives in Toronto, Ontario and works as a chess coach. He is an active participant in major chess tournaments in Canada and around the world.
