Vladimir Aleksandrovich Savon (26 September 1940 - 1 June 2005) was a Soviet chess Grandmaster. Born in Ukraine, he began playing chess at age 18. His development as a professional player was delayed due to work duties, but he eventually became a grandmaster in 1973.
Savon was a trainer of the USSR junior team in 1976-78 and worked as a chess coach later in life. He was known for his sharp tactical and aggressive plays. Despite his skill, a late start to his career and difficulties adapting to changing opening systems hindered his international career. His lack of international success did not detract from his strength as a player within the Soviet Union, as his victories over many top players could attest.
Savon passed away on 1 June 2005 related to a chronic alcohol problem. Despite his struggles, he is fondly remembered by many in the chess community for his talent, innovative chess ideas, and dynamic style of play.
