Gyula Sax (18 June 1951 – 25 January 2014) was a Hungarian chess player, who became an International Master in 1972 and was awarded the highest title, International Grandmaster, in 1974. Sax was the Hungarian champion in 1976 and 1977.
Sax was considered one of the strongest non-Russian players in the world during the 1970s and early 1980s. He competed in twelve Interzonals and World Championship cycles which included qualifying competitions, particularly the Interzonal events of 1982 and 1985. His playing style reflected uncompromising battling qualities, and he is famous for his tactical ability.
Sax’s notable tournament victories include Cheltenham 1974, Budapest 1977, Hastings 1978/79 and Naestved 1981. He had scored victories over every World Champion from Bobby Fischer to Vladimir Kramnik. His contribution to team events include the team silver at the Thessaloniki Olympiad in 1984, and the gold medal with the Hungarian national team at the European Team Championship in Skara, 1980.
He died on 25 January 2014 after a long illness.
