Sharapov's career includes participation in numerous significant chess tournaments. He scored 7.5 points from nine rounds at the 2012 Moscow Open B. He shared the first place with Gata Kamsky and others at the 2013 Cappelle-la-Grande Open. He also took part in the 2014 Chess World Cup, where he was defeated by Peter Leko in the first round.
There have been controversies surrounding Sharapov as well. He was involved in a 2013 scandal during the Ukrainian Chess Championships when his mobile phone rang during a game, which is forbidden by tournament rules. Despite the violation, the arbiter declined to forfeit him, leading to an appeal by the opposing side and a subsequent replay of the game, which Sharapov eventually lost.
