Miron Naumovich Sher is a Russian-American chess grandmaster and trainer with a degree in Mathematics from Odessa University. His first notable achievements within the chess-playing world were winning the Kharkov championship three times from 1973 to 1982. He became an International Master in 1984 and was awarded the Grandmaster title in 1992. He also played in a number of Soviet Championships during these years.
In 1990, Sher left Russia and settled in the United States. He continued to play in various national and international chess tournaments. His work outside of playing the game includes writing about chess-related topics, contributing to the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings, a major tool for serious chess players.
Sher is acclaimed as a notable chess trainer. He coached the U.S. junior chess champions in the 1990s and was the coach of Grandmaster Alex Sherzer. He also trained the national teams of both South Africa and Singapore and worked as a trainer in several U.S. chess camps.
The notable players he has trained include former prodigy and Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana, and another grandmaster, Alex Lenderman. He is a recognized FIDE Senior Trainer, justifying his reputation and skill in training chess players at both beginner and professional levels.
