Nigel David Short MBE, is a British chess grandmaster, chess columnist, chess coach and chess commentator. He became a Grandmaster at the age of 19 in 1984. By 2015, he was the oldest player ranked among FIDE's top 100 players.
Short earned prominence for his 1985 victory in the British Championship and for his victories over notable players, including Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov. In particular, his 1993 match against Kasparov for the World Chess Championship was historic. He was defeated, but remains the only English player to have won a Candidate Match.
As an active player, Short continues to compete in tournaments around the world. In addition to playing, he has contributed to the sport as a member of the FIDE and a coach. He has also provided commentary for high profile matches, and has written numerous articles for chess publications.
Nigel Short has created controversies as well with his comments on women’s mental abilities and their participation in chess. He served as the Vice President of the chess governing body FIDE from October 2018 to December 2021.
He has been awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to chess.
