Shulman immigrated to the United States in December 1999, and has since represented the country on a few occasions. He won the U.S. Championship in 2008 and has competed on the U.S. team in the biennial Chess Olympiad, earning a team bronze in 2008 and 2010.
Outside of competition, Shulman is involved in chess education. He established the the Yury Shulman International Chess School and authored a chess book. In 2011, he was recognized with the "Chess Educator of the Year" award. He also co-founded and is the Chief Curriculum Officer of an organization called Chess Without Borders, which has raised over $200,000 for charitable causes around the globe. Shulman is married to fellow Belarusian chess player Viktorija Ni and they both live in Illinois, United States. They have a son named Gabriel.
