Vladimir Pavlovich Simagin (21 July 1919 - 25 September 1968) was a Russian chess player-professional who was a three-time Moscow Champion (1952, 1956 and 1959) and was awarded the title of International Grandmaster by Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), the international chess federation in 1962.
Simagin was born in Moscow and participated in various tournaments. He was best known for his brilliant and imaginative style of play. He also worked as a chess coach and columnist. He was also a chess opening pioneer and new variations in the English Opening and Sicilian Defence, for example, were attributed to him.
Some of his notable achievements include six appearances in the Soviet Chess Championships and winning the Mar del Plata tournament in Argentina in 1962. He scored victories over renowned players like Tigran Petrosian, Paul Keres, and Efim Geller, among others.
Simagin unexpectedly died of a heart attack during the Kislovodsk tournament in 1968, at the age of 49. His contributions to the game of chess were commemorated by his homeland through the organization of the Vladimir Simagin Memorial tournament.
