Vignir Vatnar Stefánsson is an Icelandic chess grandmaster who was born on December 12, 1982. He earned the title of International Master (IM) in 1999 and was later awarded the grandmaster (GM) title in 2007.
Stefánsson's chess career saw him claim numerous championship titles. He won the Icelandic Chess Championship in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2013. He was also part of the Icelandic team in the Chess Olympiad and represented Iceland at the Nordic Chess Championship where he won a silver medal in 2003 and took home the champion's gold in 2015. He is renowned for his impressive performance in the Chess Olympiad of 2010 in Russia, where he scored 8 out of 11 possible points.
Even after retiring as a chess professional, Stefánsson remains active in the chess world. He was appointed as the Chair of Icelandic Chess Association's tournament committee in 2015. He currently continues to coach young talents, pursuing his aim to develop the next generation of chess players.
