René Stern is a French chess player. Born on January 23, 1972 in Colmar, he holds the title of Grandmaster, the highest title a chess player can attain other than World Champion, which is given by the World Chess Federation. Stern earned his Grandmaster title in 2000.

Stern won the French Chess Championship in 1998 and 2001. In the 2001 edition, he shared first place with Laurent Fressinet and Étienne Bacrot but was declared the winner because of a better tie-break score (head-to-head results against the other tied players).

In addition to his two French Championship titles, Stern also won the International Open of Sevilla in 2000 and the Open de Sants, Hostafrancs i la Bordeta in Barcelona in 2003.

René Stern has played several times in the Chess Olympiad representing France. In the 33rd Olympiad held in Elista in 1998, his performance helped the French team to finish in sixth place. In the 34th Olympiad held in Istanbul in 2000, the French team finished third and won the bronze medal.
