Gösta Stoltz was a Swedish chess player who was one of the world's strongest players prior to World War II. He was formally awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 1954. Stoltz represented Sweden in several Chess Olympiads and, although his performance varied, he won several individual and team medals.
He was born on 9 May 1904 in Stockholm, Sweden. His career began when he worked as a taxi driver to support himself while playing chess. In the 1930s, he finished 2nd-3rd at Copenhagen, tied for 4-5th at Hamburg and scored his first major success by winning Maribor in 1934, ahead of the Junior World Champion, Vasja Pirc.
In 1937, Stoltz won his first Swedish Chess Championship and later competed in the Chess Olympiads. In 1953, he won at Mar del Plata and was awarded the grandmaster title by FIDE the following year.
Stoltz passed away on 26 July 1963. He was married and had one son. Despite his brief career, he is considered one of Sweden's best chess players.
