Alexander Stripunsky is a Ukrainian-born American grandmaster of chess. He was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine in 1970. He immigrated to the United States in 1999. His achievements include winning the Glenbrook North Chess Tournament in 2005 and finishing second in the 2005 U.S. Chess Championship. Although he did not win the championship, he held the eventual winner, Hikaru Nakamura, to a pair of draws.
Stripunsky graduated from the Kharkiv Pedagogical Institute in Ukraine and became an International Grandmaster in 1992. He has taught chess in both Ukraine and the United States, and has served as a coach for the U.S. Chess Olympiad team. He has also made considerable contributions to chess literature, being an author of many articles about different aspects of chess theory. Stripunsky is viewed as one of the strongest grandmasters in the United States.
