Herman Claudius Suradiradja is an Indonesian chess player and former national champion, who was born on November 14, 1947. Suradiradja became the first Indonesian International Master (IM) in 1975, and Grandmaster (GM) in 1986.
Suradiradja initially gained recognition in the chess world when he won the Boys' Under-20 Championship in Singapore in 1969. He later claimed the Indonesian national title on two occasions. His first achievement as an IM was winning the Asian Championship in 1975.
In 1978, Suradiradja was awarded the Grandmaster title after winning an international tournament in Budapest, Hungary. He subsequently earned a second GM title in 1986 at the Dubai Open. In addition to his achievements, Suradiradja represented Indonesia in ten Chess Olympiads between 1970 and 1992.
He was a central figure in Indonesian chess for a considerable period, serving as a guiding influence for many younger countrymen. Notably, Utut Adianto and Susanto Megaranto are among those who credit him as an essential mentor in their development. Suradiradja remains active in the local chess community in Jakarta, providing coaching and participating in several tournaments. His interests outside chess include journalism and music.
