Emil Davidovich Sutovsky is an Israeli chess grandmaster and the president of the Association of Chess Professionals. He is known for his aggressive playing style and remarkable calculating ability among chess elite.
Born on September 19, 1977 in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, Soviet Union, Sutovsky started playing chess at age three. He earned the International Master title in 1994, and the Grandmaster title in 1996, the same year he won the World Junior Chess Championship. He has won three individual European Chess Championships, the last being in 2011.
Sutovsky is also recognised for his contributions to chess organisational matters. He became the president of Association of Chess Professionals (ACP), a non-profit organisation established to protect the rights of professional chess players in 2009. His term has seen significant developments such as introduction of the ACP Tour, reforming the World Championship cycle and changes to the chess calendar.
He remains an active player while simultaneously working in an administrative capacity and has been awarded the Chess Oscar in 2001. He has also written a column for the popular Russian chess magazine “64”.
