Robin Swinkels (born April 30,1989 in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands) is a Dutch chess grandmaster.
Swinkels, who learned to play chess from his mother at the age of six, attributed his early development in the game to the training he received at the Stichting Regionale Trainingen of the Royal Dutch Chess Federation as well as the coaching he received from Harmen Jonkman, the grandmaster who taught his sister Anne too.
In 2007, he won the International Open of Sants, Hostafrancs and La Bordeta in Barcelona and in 2008, he became a grandmaster (GM), the highest title a chess player can attain. Later in the same year, he played on the Dutch team at the 38th Chess Olympiad, scoring 5.5 out of 9.
Swinkels also participated in many domestic tournaments, including the Dutch Championship, and the open and closed groups of the Corus Chess Tournament, as well as international ones such as the Sparkassen Chess Meeting, the Proximus tournament in Louvain-la-Neuve, and the European Individual Chess Championship.
When not competing, Swinkels has worked as a chess trainer and second. He has been an official trainer of the Royal Dutch Chess Federation since 2008 and also served as a coach during the World Youth Championships, European Youth Championships and other training camps. He also writes about his chess experiences on his blog.
