Hugo ten Hertog, born on 18th of January 1994 in Utrecht, is a Dutch chess player who was awarded the title of Grandmaster (GM) in 2019 by FIDE, the international chess federation. He was awarded the title of International Master (IM) in 2012 and FIDE Master (FM) in 2011.
Hugo learned to play chess from his father and brother and went on to join the youth club of the Utrecht chess society. His initial chess training was in the 'Stappenmethode' or 'Steps method', an educational method used by the Royal Dutch Chess Federation.
Among his numerous achievements, Hugo won the Dutch Youth Chess Championship in the U18 division in 2009 when he was 15 years old, and in 2018 he won the Dutch Open Chess Championship. In 2016 and 2018, he won a match against former World Champion Anatoly Karpov during the Paul Keres Memorial Tournament.
He also competed in the European Youth Chess Championship in the U10 division in 2004 and U16 division in 2009, and the World Youth Chess Championship in the U12 division in 2005 and U14 division in 2008.
Hugo has multiple IM norms from competitions including the Schaakweek Apeldoorn GM 2012, FSGM March 2012, LUCOPEN 2012, Groningen Chess Festival 2012, and Batavia Chess Tournament 2013, as well as GM norms from tournaments including the Batavia Chess Tournament (2016, 2019) and the Dutch Chess Championship (2018).
