Eugenio Torre is a prominent chess Grandmaster from the Philippines who is widely known as the first player from Asia to be awarded the title of chess Grandmaster. He was born on November 4, 1951, and he earned his Grandmaster title in 1974. Torre has competed in numerous chess competitions, most notably representing the Philippines in 23 Chess Olympiads.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Torre consistently won and placed high in numerous international tournaments, including winning the 1976 Manila Marlboro which cemented him as one of the world's top players of that era. He has also won or shared the first place in major tournaments like the Hong Kong tournament (1981), IBM tournament in Manila (1978) and Bad Godesberg tournament (Germany, 1979).
Torre was also a notable fixture in different world championship cycles, participating as one of the seconds (a chess term for support staff) in the World Chess Championships. Specifically, he supported GM Anatoly Karpov in his World Championship match in 1978 against GM Viktor Korchnoi. He also improved the standard of chess in the Philippines and Asia by mentoring several prominent grandmasters.
