Petar Trifunović was a Yugoslav chess Grandmaster known for his significant wins and contributions to the chess world. He was born on 31st July 1910 in Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Austria-Hungary and died on 8th November 1980 in Belgrade, SFR Yugoslavia. Trifunović earned the International Master title in 1950 and the International Grandmaster title in 1953.
In Yugoslav tournaments, he held a remarkable record, winning ten of sixteen between 1945 and 1962. Internationally, he secured wins in Amsterdam in 1962, Stockholm in 1964, and played an important role in Yugoslavia securing two team silver medals at Chess Olympiads.
Throughout his career, Trifunović took part in several Chess Olympiads, and his best individual result was in 1950, where he won a bronze medal. He also successfully participated in European Team Championships, winning two team gold medals, two team silver, and one individual bronze.
Trifunović never competed for the World Chess Championship, but he was a candidate in 1953 and 1955. He was highly respected for his defensive playing style and his abilities as an endgame player. Apart from playing, he mentored many Yugoslavian players and contributed widely to chess literature.
