Mijo Udovčić is a notable Croatian chess player, who was named International Master (IM) in 1952 and subsequently International Grandmaster (GM), the highest title in chess, in 1958. Born on 4 January 1920 in Karlovac, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, he was a prominent chess player during the years after World War II.
Udovčić showed an early talent for the game of chess, participating in many major tournaments and achieving a number of significant performances in his career. He was a chess champion in his home country, winning the Yugoslav Chess Championship in 1951 and 1957. Additionally, Udovčić competed in several international tournaments, such as the Interzonal in Goteborg in 1955, where he placed 13th. He also represented his country internationally in team events such as the Chess Olympiads, participating for Yugoslavia seven times between 1950 and 1966.
Despite his achievements in the game, Udovčić's career was not only limited to playing chess. He was also a memorable chess writer and author, contributing to the development of chess literature with his books and articles.
Udovčić passed away on 20 February 1984 in Belgrade, Serbia. Despite his death, his contributions to the game of chess continue to be recognized to this day.
