Wolfgang Unzicker (26 June 1925 – 20 April 2006) was one of the strongest German chess Grandmasters from World War II to the early 1970s.
Born in Pirmasens, Germany, Unzicker became an International Master in 1950 and a Grandmaster in 1954. He stood out as an amateur player who didn't play professionally, having a non-chess career as a judge at the administrative court in Munich.
He won the German Chess Championship multiple times and participated in twelve Chess Olympiads from 1950 to 1978, with the 1950 event in Dubrovnik being his debut. He achieved one of his most notable successes in 1965 when he won the Mar del Plata tournament ahead of world champion Tigran Petrosian and other prominent players.
Unzicker also played on the European team in the USSR vs. Rest of the World match in 1970. He narrowly missed sharing first place in the 1967 Sousse Interzonal but was quite successful in international team events.
Just before his death, he played a game against the chess program "Francesca", which he won. Unzicker died on 20 April 2006 while on a holiday trip to Albufeira, Portugal.
