Zoltán Varga is a Hungarian chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster (GM) by FIDE, the international chess federation.
Varga was born on November 30, 1969 in Budapest, Hungary. He earned his International Master (IM) title in 1991 and received his GM title in 1997. Since the beginning of the 1990s, he has participated in the Hungarian Chess Championship several times, reaching his best result in 1997 when he came second. He also represented Hungary in team competitions such as the European Team Chess Championship and Wyniki Zoltana Vargi.
In addition to his chess career, Varga is a theoretical physicist, having worked at the Loránd Eötvös University and the Wigner Research Centre for Physics. He is currently at the Julius Maximilians University Würzburg, Germany, where he is a professor.
Varga has also contributed significantly to opening theory in chess. Especially noteworthy is his analysis of the Nimzo-Indian Defence.
