Evgeni Vasiukov was an internationally recognized chess player from Russia who held the title of International Grandmaster. Born on March 5, 1933, he began playing chess at the age of six and quickly developed a talent for the game. He was awarded the title of International Master in 1958, before becoming an International Grandmaster in 1961.


Vasiukov won the Moscow Chess Championship on six occasions, in 1955, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1972 and 1978. He also won numerous chess tournaments throughout his career, including the Capablanca Memorial in Havana 1967 and 1968, the Biel Chess Festival in 1970, and the Reggio Emilia chess tournament in 1971-72.


Vasiukov played a significant role in Soviet Team Chess, with appearances in seven Student Olympiads where he helped the USSR win four team golds, and two individual golds. He also took part in seven European Team Championships, resulting in seven team gold medals, and two individual golds for the USSR.


In 1995, Vasiukov served as a trainer within the World Chess Championship, supporting challenger Gata Kamsky. Additionally, he was recognized for his contributions to the game with the Russian Chess Federation's award for Meritorious Master of Sport in 2003, celebrating his 70th birthday.


Evgeni Vasiukov died on May 10, 2018. Despite his death, his legacy within the chess community continues due to his significant contribution to chess both as a player and trainer.
