He also became the first Chinese player to break into the top 10 in the world rankings.

Born June 31, 1987 in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China, Wang started playing chess at a young age. His talent for the game was recognized early, with him being crowned under-10 World Youth Champion in Menorca, 1998. He reached the grandmaster title in 2004, making him the 18th grandmaster from China.

In 2004, he gained several accomplishments, including winning the 2004 World Junior Chess Championship and the Chinese Chess Championship the following year; in 2006, he came second in the 2006 Chinese Chess Championship.

Wang’s real breakthrough, however, came year 2008, when he shot to the top of the world rankings after going 85 games without a loss - the longest streak in top-level chess since Mikhail Tal's 95-game streak in 1973-1974 . His peak rating, achieved in 2010, was 2756.

Wang has several notable results in team competitions. He was part of the Chinese national team that won gold at the World Team Chess Championships in 2005 and the Chess Olympiad in 2012. He took part in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Chess World Cups and 2005, 2011 FIDE World Chess Championships.
