Peter Kenneth Wells (born 17 April 1965) is an English chess grandmaster, a title awarded by the World Chess Federation, FIDE. He was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire.


Wells has authored several books on chess, including Chess Explained: The Queen's Indian", published by Gambit Publications in 2006. He won the British Rapidplay Chess Championship in 1994 and was joint British Champion in 1991.


Wells mainly serves as a trainer with the English Chess Federation, a role he has held since 2005. He was also the trainer for the national women's team at the 2010 Chess Olympiad in Russia. Wells achieved his grandmaster title in 1994. In the British Chess Championships of 2006, he came second, after Stewart Haslinger.


He uses the Scheveningen Variation of the Sicilian Defence, as a significant part of his opening repertoire, in addition to having a wealth of classical training.


He earned his International Master (IM) title in 1988 and got his International Grandmaster (IGM) title in 1995. Wells continues to be an active player at the international level, competing in several tournaments and events. He was also a former chess columnist for the Daily Telegraph.
