Alex Yermolinsky is a Ukrainian-born American chess Grandmaster who won the U.S. Chess Championship in 1993 and 1996. Prior to becoming a Grandmaster, a title awarded in 1992, he was a Candidate Master, a designation equivalent to a black belt in martial arts. He has represented the United States in multiple Chess Olympiads, contributing to team silver and bronze medals in 1996 and 1998, respectively. With a profession in chess, he also instructs and offers his analytical skills to several online platforms like the Internet Chess Club. He has co-authored a book titled "The Road to Chess Improvement". Born on April 11, 1958, in Omsk, Russia (then USSR), he spent his early years there and left following the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Yermolinsky is a resident of South Dakota after getting relocated by a US refugee program, where he worked several retail jobs in parallel with his chess career.
