Yu Shaoteng is a Chinese chess Grandmaster. Born on 12 April 1974 in Shanghai, he moved to Shijiazhuang where he was trained under the guidance of Wang Xiangming in his early years. He became a Grandmaster in 1995.
Yu has achieved several victories in multiple chess tournaments. He won the Chinese Chess Championship in 1995, 1998 and 1999. In 2000, he won the CCA International Open in the Philippines and the Paks International Tournament in Hungary. In 2001, he won the 2nd World University Chess Championship. He also served as the coach for the Chinese national team at the 2006 Chess Olympiad in Turin.
Although not competing as frequently, Yu continued his work as a chess coach and achieved considerable success. Notably, he has coached Hou Yifan, a women's world chess champion. His coaching has led to the victory of the Chinese team at the 2014 Chess Olympiad and the 2015 Women's World Team Chess Championship.
