Sergey Zagrebelny is a former Uzbekistani chess Grandmaster, coach, and occasional writer-commentator for chess events. He was born on September 14, 1965, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He was awarded the International Master title in 1987 and the Grandmaster title in 1990 by FIDE, the international chess federation.
Zagrebelny's notable achievements in chess include several stellar performances at the Chess Olympiads, where he represented Uzbekistan. Individual performances include a gold medal in 1992 and a bronze medal in 1998. He won the national championship in 1995 and 2001 and became the Ukrainian Champion in 1993 after immigrating with his wife.
At international tournaments, his highlights include a shared first place at the Cappelle-la-Grande Open in 2002, among many other tournaments where he finished as the winner or shared the win.
As a coach, Zagrebelny was part of the team that worked with the Women's World Chess Champion, Alexandra Kosteniuk. He sometimes wrote reviews about significant chess events for the Russian Chess Federation website.
He lived in Russia since moving there in 2000 and later lived in Switzerland, where his wife gained citizenship.
