Instead of the standard 2...Nd5, Black plays the provocative 2...Ne4. The knight on e4 is precariously placed but creates immediate tactical complications. After 3.d3 Nc5 or 3.d4 d5, the resulting positions are unusual and can surprise opponents, but the variation is not considered fully sound.
