Lasker simul special
1. g3 h5
1. g3 h5
The Lasker Simul Special arises after 1.g3 h5 in the King's Fianchetto Opening. ECO code: A00.
Overview
This line takes its name from World Champion Emanuel Lasker (1868–1941), who encountered the unusual 1...h5 reply during simultaneous exhibitions. The move is provocative: Black immediately advances a flank pawn, staking a claim on the kingside while doing nothing for development or central control.
Strategic Themes & Plans
After 1.g3 h5, White typically continues with standard development: 2.Nf3 or 2.Bg2 followed by d3, Nf3, and 0-0. Black's h5-pawn can become either a useful battering ram (with a later ...h4) or a long-term weakness. White should not be distracted by the pawn advance and should focus on central control and harmonious piece development. The position is highly unconventional and rarely seen outside of simultaneous or casual play.
