Playing the Nimzovich-Larsen attack - Dutch variation

The Dutch Variation of the Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack arises after 1.b3 f5. ECO code: A01.

Overview

With 1...f5, Black adopts a Dutch Defence-like structure, aiming for kingside attacking chances and control of the e4-square.

Strategic Themes & Plans

The bishop on b2 is ideally placed to exploit the weakened e8–h5 diagonal and the a1–h8 diagonal, which are both opened by Black's ...f5. White can develop with Bb2, e3, Nf3, and aim to exploit Black's kingside weaknesses. Black should complement ...f5 with ...Nf6, ...e6 or ...g6, and aim for a Stonewall or Leningrad Dutch formation. The tension between the fianchettoed bishop and Black's Dutch structure creates an interesting strategic battle.
