Playing the Queen's pawn - Charlick (Englund) gambit

The Englund Gambit arises after 1.d4 e5. ECO code: A40.

History

Named after Fritz Englund (1871–1933), a Swedish player who analysed this gambit. Also known as the Charlick Gambit after Henry Charlick, who played it in the 19th century. Black immediately sacrifices a pawn for active piece play.

Main Lines

After 2.dxe5, Black has several options:

• 2...Nc6 – Developing and targeting the e5-pawn.

• 2...d6 – Immediately recapturing the pawn.

• 2...f6 – Aggressively challenging the e5-pawn, but weakening the kingside.

Strategic Themes & Plans

The gambit is considered objectively unsound—White can hold the extra pawn with accurate play. Black's compensation lies in active piece development and the element of surprise. It is rarely seen at master level but has some following at club level due to its trappy nature.
