Playing the Queen's pawn game

The Queen's Pawn Game with 1...Nf6 arises after 1.d4 Nf6. ECO code: A45.

Overview

This is Black's most common response to 1.d4, the gateway to the Indian Defence systems. By developing the knight and controlling d5 and e4, Black maintains maximum flexibility.

Main Lines

White's second move determines the opening system:

2.c4 – The main move, entering the Indian Defence complex: Nimzo-Indian Defence, Queen\'s Indian Defence, King\'s Indian Defence, Grünfeld Defence.

2.Nf3 – Flexible, may transpose into various systems.

2.Bg5 – The Trompowsky Attack.

2.Bf4 – The London System.

2.Nc3 – The Veresov Attack.

Strategic Themes & Plans

This is one of the most important crossroads in opening theory. Black's 1...Nf6 prevents 2.e4 and allows Black to choose between many different defensive systems based on White's continuation.
