I've been reading the Bible for more than 20 years. Here's my attempt to give its essential contents as to what happens after we die -

For good people, the Bible has bad news:

one day you will die, and stand before God, and his standard is perfection. If you claim that you are good enough to enter heaven, it will be like you are mocking him, and he will rightly sentence you to unending torment.

For bad people, the Bible has good news:

God sent his own Son Jesus to die on the cross, to take the hell punishment that bad people like you and me deserve (paying our debt to God in full). God now offers heaven as a free gift to anyone who will accept that Christ paid their debt.

The terms of this offer are that it is completely free, so that Jesus gets all the credit - you can't try to mix it with good works of your own to earn God's approval.

You can choose to show your gratitude to God for this free gift by doing good for others for the rest of this lifetime (with no maximum restriction as to how much good you do), but you can never earn heaven by doing that.
