Chess Terms : Gambit Explained
A gambit is an opening in which a player offers a sacrifice—usually a pawn, occasionally a piece—to gain a compensating advantage such as faster development, the initiative, open lines, or attacking chances. The term derives from the Italian gambetto (tripping). Famous gambits include the King's Gambit, the Queen's Gambit, and the Evans Gambit.
