Take a look at Chessops and try it. I've used it for a couple of years now and have found it and excellent site. No charges, no interuptions, no hassle. Someone on RHP suggested it on the Forum.
RHP. Move some pieces around. Some of the players actually know most of the rules, many are not using engines, and others, well, actually play chess in between posting in the forums.

Pick your opening, play 6 games with it (3 White & 3 Black).

The best way to learn an opening and discover it's strengths
and weakness's is to play it.
You can visit another site or read book and it may say such and such
a position is a plus for White. But until you try and demonstrate it in
one of your own games then such knowledge is pointless.
I don't know Greenpawn. When you are playing crappy players, you can see alot of stupid crap. Since when you are first starting out you suck too, chances are the crappy stuff your opponent is throwing at you could look really good against the even crappier moves you are making.
I think it is much better to get a good book on the opening to at least see the kind of stuff you should be shooting for. I really like e books since they are easy to use and generally come with data bases for the opening.
Once you have a clue, then it is time to try it out.
I agree that eventually you'll need to play. It is likely that you can be out of book within a three or four moves. Sometimes you'll even get stuff like 1. d4 a6 and be out of book in move one.
The reason why I think getting a book is important is because when I first started playing, someone suggested that I play the colle because it was easy and idiot proof. I get all set up then go for my c pawn push. It wasn't until I picked up Oleinkov's e book did I come to understand I should have been looking to push my e pawn. When I figured that out, I started winning a few more games.
Of course I had to learn from there, but at least I was now heading in the right direction.

if youre new to chess though i would waste any time with openings, just do a book on opening principles used from half.com and then blast through the tactics

Buy the book "How to play good opening moves" it is available on amazon.com. It will give you some insight into good opening theory. At this stage you need to learn basic tactics...and oh yes, try playing a few games. One move in how long?😞
