I played in a Brazilian Championship (Interclubs) in Campinas, 1989 (http://www.brasilbase.pro.br/bre1989.htm).

In the 1st round, my opponent was a 8 year-old boy.
    - It's ridiculous! I don't want to play with a kid! I'm 22 and I play since my 8!!! - I saw for my team mates.
    - Be, careful, Helder. - answer my friend José Roberto Morau - This kid is FIDE master, because he was 2nd place in a World Championship for kids in Puerto Rico (see in http://www.tabuleirodexadrez.com.br/rafael-leitao.htm).
    His name: Rafael Duailibe Leitão.
Our game was 5 hours of duration... 😞 :'(

hard luck, but maybe playing 32..e5 and opening the diagonal was a mistake. If you bishop was on e5 would be hard to dislodge and then gxf4, Qg2 if lucky etc..

    Thanks for sharing.

All the trouble seemed to stem from 11.e5.
    A critical decision.
These moves are game deciders they are good or bad.

    His 34....Ba8.
At first I thought a hint of time trouble.
Then saw it was to allow Ra7 and Rook to the 7th.
(this kid is a cool customer)

The good news is that in 3-4 years time you will be able to tell
your friends you lasted 40 moves against GM Leitao.

Edit 1: I see 11.e5 has just been mentioned.
Did you look at the game afterwards?

The rythm was 1h30min/23 moves + 1h KO.

The trouble started with 3. Ba4. You can see, in my games, what I escape of Sicilians with white pieces. I prefer Rossolimo Variation, spanishing the Sicilian. In 1989, I didn't know the Sicilian...

I'll post comments when I study the game again. The game against Rafael was tiring for me. I was fat and sweating, without resistance, and Rafael did 2 interviews for Globo TV Network, happy and smiling... ARGH!!!

    32. Qg4. It's better, isn't it?

    Thanks for your comments! 🙂

    Hi

I saw 3.Bc4 and thought you were trying to get the youngster out
of the book. Often a good ploy v young players.

Edit 1. Not sure about 32.Qg4 as 32...Bc8 looks pretty nasty.
Also the Q+ has to handled.

Rafael Leitao is a Gm. I didnt realize they held the championship in Campinas, a bit far from Sao Paulo...

Did you notice in the time/date? The year was 1989, almost 22 years ago.

Campinas is 100km from São Paulo, not too far. But Rafael was from Maranhão, more than 5,000km from Campinas.

I did see the date, I think some of the other posters missed it so I pointed out that Leitao did become a GM (and probably top 3 in Brasil?).

I seem to recall it taking a couple hours to get to Campinas from downtown SP- sort of like having the tournament in San Jose dos Campos I guess?

I was quite small when I went from são paulo to campinas, in the 70s, but as I remember it seemed like almost the same city.

I haven't been since the early 90's- I can only imagine how far out SP is developed now. That is one city where it just seems to go on and on and on...

I suppose LA is a bit like that as well.
