You are on your summer holidays so no puzzles this week. Instead
we see some good chess from Capablanca and Nona Gaprindashvili.
A couple of positions with RHP players falling for a trap that could
have appeared in a Capablanca game. Then an RHP game where we see
one player missing a ‘well known?’ Capablanca idea and their opponent
fixating on a Gaprindashvili mating pattern missing a quicker checkmate.
These patterns do help you spot things. I saw this one right away.
Black to play.
Black missed the win which is very similar to a famous Capablanca win.
If you know the Capablanca game (full credit if you know the opponent
as well - I did) then moves and ideas jump out at you. The more you play over
games from the great players (and not so great players, you can learn things
from RHP games) then the better chance you have of spotting shots and pots.
