Certainly not 1.a4?? Kg3 ... 5.a8Q h2#.

Instead, 1.f6! gxf6 2.Kxg2 Kg5 3.a4 bxa3 4.bxa3 Kf5 5.a4 Ke5 6.d6! cxd6 7.c6! dxc6 8.a5 wins. The bK is nicely blocked out by his own pawns.

Another pitfall to avoid is 5.d6?? cxd6 6.a4 Ke6! and Black wins.

White wins by moving a2 to a4. then just race down the "a" line untill promoted to Queen.

8.a5 is not possible.

It works without f6, using that extra tempo:

1.Kxg2 Kg5 2.a4 bxa3 3.bxa3 Kxf5 4.a4 Ke5 5.d6! cxd6 6.c6! dxc6 and now the a-pawn runs.

That's a good way for White to lose. 1.a4 Kg3! and white Queens, but black mates by shoving the h-pawn to h2.

8.a5 is possible. The pawn has been on a4 since move 5.

Your line fails to 3...Kf6!, guaranteeing at least a draw for Black. That's why 1.f6 is so important - it prevents this possibility.
