Hi folks,

Zucchini and I are going to (hopefully if this works) be posting a game here that we're annotating as we play. Others are welcome to join in with comments, but see the format below first. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions about how to make this easier or better please let us know. I'm gonna post the first move and comment after this post, and then zucchini will join in when he gets a chance.

(1) Create a thread for the game in the Chess forum with the game number in the thread title as Game <ID#>: Public commenting.
Include these guidelines in the first post, and also add a link to the game.

(2) Each player posts comments for their own move just before moving.
The first line of a move post should start with the move number and selected move in standard form in bold using the [ b ] tag.
Annotations follow in whatever form the poster desires. FENs can be inserted using the [ fen ] tag (not yet implemented?).

(3) Others are allowed to post, but, to avoid confusion, should not make their post look like a move post by one of the players.

(4) Any rude comments should be alerted to the moderator immediately. I think this idea can be really good for this site, and I don't want to see people discouraged from participating, especially due to inexperience.

And away we go....

1w. Nf3

I like the flexibility of 1.Nf3. It prevents e5 and can transpose into a number of openings.

P.S. We're well into this game on move #20. We're just playing catch up here in the thread. Eventually we'll get to the moves that we're currently on in the game.

Thanks for the link Paul!

1. ... d5

I've played the Reti just once before, and it transposed into something else. (I find transpositions tough to find in my book.)

2.d4

This one will probably end up as just a regular queen's pawn game. After my d4 you can play a variety of defenses, depending upon which strategy you'd like to use. Black usually plays as their second move Nf6, c6, e6, and sometimes c4 (very aggressive). I do NOT recommend Nc6 for black this early. It blocks your c-pawn and you will need that c-pawn later. Most of these games when I'm white transpose into the Queen's Gambit Accepted, or Queen's Gambit Declined. Sometimes the Colle System or the Catalan System. But that's it for my openings that I feel ok with. All of those above will be in your book. The opening now is the same as if we had played 1.d4 ...d5, 2.Nf3.

Maybe you should stop making moves until you catch up with comments. I have questions myself a few moves later on.

Sure, we can do that. I don't think zucchini would mind. It's an unrated game and we're not gonna time each other out so we can wait.

Thanks for the suggestion! As you can see we're still working the kinks out of this. :-)

2 ...Nf6

I feel out of my element with this opening, and it is already out of book. I am picking Nf6 at your suggestion and after looking at several games that start this way using http://chesslab.com/PositionSearch.html
BTW, 1 d4 d5 2 Nf3 is not in my opening book (I have the short MCO-Beginners).

zuchini, my fritz database gives this as the most common answer, around 14 thousand games at a 45% success rate. As pointed out before, this opening will transpose into something in a few moves and 2...Nf6 will probably be played in any event so why not now?

3. Bf4

Well the opening we're in can still transpose to lots of others depending on white's move here and black's response. White has: e3 (the Colle system) c4 (Queen's gambit) g3 (King's Indian Attack) Bf4 (the London system) There are lots of other moves, but I tend to stick with those. Except g3 which I rarely play. The chesslabs site you sent is great. Thanks! I've never visited there before. That's a very nice site.

I was hoping someone would take Zucchini up on the annotation idea. Are you guys feeling any stage fright? 😲

I tend to just slap the c5 pawn down at this point, with play as normal in the QG but not quite as nice for black as it would be for white in the actual QG, because the N gives a good hold on the e4 square. Regardless, I think it equalizes.

3 ...Bf5

No opening book here.
e6 looks OK, except it confines the light bishop.
Bf5, Bg4 might be better first for that reason.
Nc6 you said is too confining. But it seems OK to me.
c3 is fine, but no need to play it now.
g6 preps for a fianchetto'd castling.

Of these, I like g6 and Bf5 best. After looking at the chesslabs site: I missed considering c5. Not something I would pick, but it was the most common move. I guess this is similar to the Queen's Gambit?
