In this game I got into a lot of trouble! I think Black should have been able to break through!

  • 1. e4 c5 2. Qd1f3
    ?! Inaccuracy. Normal is either: Nf3 (Open), Nc3 (Closed), c3 (Alapin), or d4 (Smith-Morra)
  • 2... Nb8c6 3. Bf1c4
?! Trying for Scholar's Mate. With this White loses time and allows black to push back the Bishop back and build a very strong center.
  • 3... e6
    Stopping all that nonsense.
  • 4. Ng1h3
    ?! Still trying for it.
  • 4... Nc6e5
    Securing the two bishops.
  • 5. Qf3c3 Ne5xc4 6. Qc3xc4 a6
Planning on an queenside expansion. and gaining time by attacking the queen.
  • 7. Qc4c3 d5 8. d3 a5
?! Now, I engage in a simplistic attack with ...c4 and Bb4. This is not the right idea, basing my play on one simple tactic.
  • 9. Bc1g5 Bf8e7
?? Should be the decisive mistake! As soon as I clicked Submit I realized, with horror, my mistake.
  • 10. Qc3xg7 Be7xg5 11. Nh3xg5 Qd8e7
Preventing Checkmate and planning to run away with my king.
  • 12. h4 Bc8d7 13. Qg7xh8
Allowing my king to skulk away, now a middle game checkmate is unlikely. It seems likely that White could have found a way to keep the king in the center!
