A game with some interesting tactics and an unusual looking final position.

I was a bit wary about playing this. It is all a bit tenuous, with the Knight defending 2 pieces and a pawn and covering c2. It is the sort of position where you automatically start looking for combinations if you are facing it. So I was rather nervous about playing this. It does look like the best option, driving the Queen away from the center and from covering the Kingside.

g6 was playable here as well as it doesn't loose immediately. However, running it through Fritz shows that eventually Black has to sacrifice the exchange. The line Fritz gives is: 25...g6 26 Qh6+ Kg8 27 g4 Rxd7 28 g5 Rf7 29 exf7+ Qxf7 30 gxf6. I'm pretty sure that isn't the line I saw. 27 g4 was not something I recall seeing. I do know I thought I was still good after g6.

Fritz is not impressed with this move. I don't understand the moves it suggests. I was lining up heavy pieces against the King and seeing what happened next. Not very deep, but it often works out well.

Shuffling my rook into the middle of Black's position. I came up with this idea on this move. I was trying to think of something forcing, and couldn't come up with anything other than this. It is slightly dodgy as it ends up with a rook defended by a knight defended by a rook. Any part of that sequence gets interfered with and pieces go missing. As you might guess, Fritz does not approve.

Attacking the piece holding the Rook in place. It looks like the Rook is doomed. And it was. But not in the way my opponent expected. Fritz lists Black's move as a blunder and suggests Ng5 or Kg8.

Black is lost after this. Fritz confirms this, but it doesn't need a super GM engine to sense things are very bad for the Black King.

The only way to avoid mate is for Black to play Rxd4, but this leaves him down a huge amount of material.

After this the win is pretty simple.

The check with a discovered attack on the Queen is the end.
