  • 1. e4 e5 2. Ng1f3 Nb8c6 3. d4 Ng8f6
? White aims to dominate the centre by exchanging his d-pawn for Black's e-pawn. Black usually plays 3...exd4, as he has no good way to maintain his pawn on e5.
  • 4. d5 Nf6xe4
No way to avoid a material loss. Knight for a pawn and destroying the white center may be better than Ne7, a passive move that loses less material but also loses position and halts the black development by blocking the lines of the queen and the bishop.
  • 5. dxc6 d6
why not bxc6, opening the long diagonal for the queen's bishop, building center control, and taking a pawn?
  • 6. Bf1b5
    Trying for cxb7+ and then bxa8 Q.
  • 6... b6
! the best and perhaps only good defense.
  • 7. Bb5c4
Same trick on another diagonal, Qe5 forking threats on Qxf7 checkmate and Qxe4.
  • 7... Bc8e6 8. Bc4xe6
so much for bishop tricks, alas.
  • 8... fxe6 9. Qd1e2 d5 10. Nf3xe5 Bf8d6
? Basically a good move, but the h4-e8 diagonal, with the white knight threatening g6 and f7, is more urgent. Perhaps Nf6 first.
  • 11. Qe2h5 g6 12. Ne5xg6 Ne4f6
    ! Well defended.
  • 13. Qh5h3
tempo move, keeping up the pressure on the black rook while adding a new threat. No time to counter both.
