Annotated Games
  • 1. d4
Perhaps the second most popular of all chess openings, 1.d4 is rather standard.
  • 1... d5
    In terms of response to 1.d4, either 1... d5 or 1... Nf6 are best. I chose d5.
  • 2. c4
Queen's Gambit, statistically the best opening for white out of millions of possibilities.
  • 2... e5
?! Albin counter-gambit. This completely ignores white's thrust with 2.c4 and challenges the centre with an unprotected e-pawn.
  • 3. dxe5
    The obvious choice.
  • 3... d4
This pawn on d4 is the whole point of giving up a pawn. It is cramping white's space and will be very hard to get rid of. Keep in mind that we are down a pawn at this stage though.
  • 4. e3
Threatening to capture our hard earned pawn on d4 which would also get rid of his doubled pawns. It allows his light squared bishop to enter the game.
  • 4... Bf8b4
! Bb4+, a great move that sets a trap. It is from here on it can either go well or just averagely for black, depending on whether black takes the bait. White will naturally play Bd2, setting the trap.
  • 5. Bc1d2 dxe3
!! Now we come to our trap. Black has left his bishop on b4 hanging, but not for free, as white will find out once he greedily snatches the piece.
  • 6. Bd2xb4
?? He accepted the gambit. This is where it goes bad for white.
