Schliemann defence + Knights vs Bishops + Zugzwang city

  • 25. Ra1e1 Re8xe1 26. Nd3xe1
It almost feels like this is the start of a long endgame... White is a pawn up, but Black has the move, and more territory
  • 26... b6 27. Kg1f1 a5 28. a4
? Ke2 was better, Black can now use both Bishops to at least win back a pawn
  • 28... Bf5e6 29. Nb3a1 Be6c4 30. Kf1g1 Bh6c1
This neat 3 move sequence equalises the game, materially speaking, and Black could even have a slight edge
  • 31. b4
? Fritz evaluates b2-b3 as the better move, gaining some tempo, then following up with c3-c4 to hold the pawns
  • 31... Bc1b2
Now (after the forced a1Nc2) Black can win back the pawn as well as create a strong threat with b6-b5, as Black's passed a-pawn would be more dangerous than White's
  • 32. Na1c2 Bb2xc3 33. bxa5 Bc4b3
? This cancels the threat, and allows White to get the game closer to level, but Black still has an edge
  • 34. axb6 cxb6 35. f4
    Some counter-play is needed
  • 35... Bb3xa4 36. Kg1f2 b5 37. Kf2e2 Bc3a5 38. Ke2d3
This allows Nf3, but Black's passed pawn can push onwards
  • 38... b4 39. Ne1f3 Ba4b5
? Black could start tying up White's position with b4-b3, forcing the Knights to defend, and then look to slowly improve the position
  • 40. Kd3e3
(Incidentally, this move was my 25,000th on RHP)
