Back to basics; some chess 101

  • 17... Nh3f4 18. Qh5xf7 Ne7g6
Probably not the best option for Black, the position is now equal according to computer analysis.
  • 19. Qf7xd7
With the Queens off, the position can simplify a little.
  • 19... Rd8xd7 20. Ra1d1 Nf4g2 21. Ke1f1 Ng2xe3
This was to remove a defender of g5
  • 22. Nc4xe3 Bd6e7 23. Rh1g1 Rd7xd1 24. Ne3xd1 Ng6f4 25. Rg1g3 Kc8d7
? Ne6 would have been better, as this wins the g5 pawn by force
  • 26. Nd1b2 Rh8d8
However Black now notices that White's King does not have g2 or e2 as flight squares, as these are covered by the Knight, therefore has 'back rank weaknesses'
  • 27. Rg3g4 Kd7e6
The King clears the path for the Rook... White must play something like f2-f3 to enable an escape route for the King
  • 28. Rg4h4
Black can ignore the threat to h7
  • 28... Be7a3
This hits the only defender of d1, the square that is needed to give checkmate... White must lose a piece, or perhaps just an exchange with Rxf4
  • 29. Nb2c4
    This is missed
  • 29... Rd8d1
0-1, although not at all bad for a new starter
