Presumably black was frightened of me uncovering my bishop first and/or wants to disrupt my pawns?

? Nxf3 is just too bland. I often play exf3, it opens a file for my rook, prevents black's knight advancing and a timely f4 will hold the centre.

! Not just a cheap check but the start of tying black up in knots.

If Bxd4 then Bf4, Rc1, Rd1 pile on the pressure
