an interesting start. For a beginner you should learn one opening and stick to it until you've got it mastered. For you that would be Kings pawn (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Opening_theory_in_chess/1._e4)

this is good. you threatened my pawn and are asserting control over the d4 square

not usually a good move. You opened up the pawn wall on your kings side (which is really helpful to protect you when you castle). Also, it doesn't do anything for you. The key in the beginning is to try to control the center and get your knights and bishops out into play

Take a look now. I've got 3 pieces out and I'm covering a lot of the board.
          • 5. e3 d5
Now I assert control over the center by pushing up my 3 pawn
            • 6. e4
This is good. You now have 2 pawns threatening d4. If we trade pawns here that will open up the d file and you can then trade queens with me, which I don't want.

instead of trading pawns I push forward.. now I control more of the board.

I assume you are planning to go b4 next to push back my bishop so I counter it with a5. I'm planning on castling soon to my kings side so my pawns on the queen side can move out.

getting my Knight on this square is important and useful. By playing h4 a while ago you let me post out here. I'm looking to fork eventually by moving Nf2

This isn't much of a threat to me since I am covered by my bishop so I can now castle since I'm in a great position and safe from attack. Black should always feel unsafe since white got to move first. As white you have to keep black back on his toes often.
